Field Trip Frequently Asked Questions
Field studies are a very important part of second grade. To ensure that the trip goes smoothly and that all students remain safe, engaged, treated appropriately, and having fun, we need some help on your end (parents/chaperones). Please see the list of frequently asked questions and answers below.
How can I become a chaperone on a field trip? To chaperone a field trip you need the following clearances:
-Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check
-Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance
-Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Check
If you lost your field trip form, you can download one here !
What can students wear/bring on a field trip? We ask that students bring ONLY a brown bag lunch on their trip that is disposable. Please do not send in their regular lunch bags, water bottles, etc. Students should not bring money on the trip. Students should wear their regular GWCS uniform and comfortable walking shoes!
Are chaperones able to buy any treats/food for their groups? Due to allergies/safety concerns, we kindly ask that parents do not buy any food for the children in their groups. We also ask that parents do not buy souvenirs for the children in their groups out of fairness to the other children. Thank you for your understanding.
How are chaperons selected for a field trip? Those who have completed all of their clearances and have submitted them so that they are on file with Mrs. Birkmire (no exceptions may be made) are selected at random. Clearances must be on file by the due date of field trip money and permission slips to give parents ample time to take off of work if necessary/make schedule changes. If you have been selected for a field trip you will be contacted by your child’s teacher. Please let the teacher know as soon as possible if you are able to attend. They will then send home the necessary chaperone paperwork that must be signed and returned to the teacher before the trip.
Chaperones: PLEASE READ!
**If you need to cancel, please give the teacher at least 24 hours notice if possible! We will need to find a replacement chaperone before departing for the trip.
Thank you for your help and support!

- Please do not bring money to purchase gifts/items for kids in your group. It really is not fair to the other children. This goes for food/drinks as well due to allergy concerns.
- You MUST ride the bus to and from school with us.
- It is helpful to put the kids in your group in pairs so that you can better keep track of them.
- You may not bring your other children on the field study
